It says Oldest Backup: None and Latest Backup: None. When I turn on Time Machine, it seems to know that my backup disk is "My Passport for Mac" but it doesn't auto recognize it as the one previously used. I can see the Backups.backupdb folder and the dates of previous backups. The drive was recognized and I was able to see all contents in Finder.

I have been receiving the notifications that Time Machine hasn't backed up in "XX days." I retrieved my external hard drive (WD My Passport for Mac 2TB) and plugged it in to the laptop. Previous OS was probably 10.8 Mountain Lion. I did this prior to upgrading to OS High Sierra. The last time I backed up the computer using Time Machine was in Dec 2017. Arrgghh! Hope Apple figures out soon how to use a networked drive (i.e., an Airport USB Disk) with Time Machine. Which means I need to order yet another hard drive. It looks as though a dedicated drive for each Mac is the only way to get Time Machine to do its job efficiently. So now, every time I need to access those files - or Time Machine needs to perform a backup, I presume - this disk image must be mounted, a process that is already time-consuming and will take longer as that disk image grows in size with each back up session. On the partition for the MacBook Pro, however, Time Machine created a disk image called MacBookPro_0016cb8bbe03.sparsebundle, mounted this disk image, and created inside the disk image the same folder/file structure as created for the iMac G5. Inside this folder is another folder labelled "iMac G5," inside of which are all the proper files and folders reflecting those on the iMac G5. For the Mac to which the drive is connected, Time Machine created on the backup partition a folder called Backups.backupdb. Per your suggestion, I partitioned the external drive and assigned a partition to each Mac.

Short of Apple releasing a patch that allows Airport Disk sharing, is there any way that I can get at least two of my three Macs to properly back up using Time Machine? Thanks!
I've tried sharing the drive (via Share Folder in Get Info), but I can't change the permissions for Reading and Writing to that remote Time Machine folder.
Time machine on the remote Mac doesn't use the existing folder but creates a full-backup disk image outside the Time Machine folder. But leaving the drive connected to one machine and trying to use the drive from the second machine doesn't work. That created two folders inside the Time Machine folder, one for each machine. Is there any other way of backing up more than one Mac to a single drive? I tried connecting the drive to one Mac, backing up, then connecting the same drive to another machine and backing it up. I had already bought a 500GB USB drive and connected it to the Airport Extreme base station in preparation for Leopard. I was expecting to be able to back up the entire network (actually, only 3 Macs) to a single external drive.
Apple really wiped me out when they dropped Airport Disk support for Time Machine.
